Caspian

I had been practically inconsolable for weeks as I waited for Rosalind to return home to me. I hadn’t expected it to be like this. Bryn opened the door to the library with a groan and a huff. Will carried her into the room.

I tore myself up and rushed to Rosalind’s side. My hands trembled as I tried to assess the damage to the girl in front of me. Her neck was black and blue with finger-shaped bruises, but the blood on her mouth and legs made me wonder where else she was hurt. Her shirt was destroyed. She laid in front of me bloody and practically naked. I gently lifted her chin to mine and pressed my forehead to hers. I pulled her out of Will’s arms and into mine.

“What happened?” My voice had a strange hard edge to it that made her shrink back.

I felt a cool distance forming itself around my heart as she fell into me and sobbed. I didn’t want to look at the bruises, blue and black, on her back that now matched my own scars. Her right foot twisted at an odd angle. I had to look away from it- the swelling of her ankle. Blood dripped onto the floor. Fear marred her beautiful face and tainted my reunion with her.

I pulled her tighter into my arms and carried her towards the couch. I sat her on the edge of the sofa and quickly grabbed willow bark from the bathroom. I dropped the brown liquid over her cuts, and she winced as the salve smoothed over any infection that had started.

Bryn didn’t meet my eyes as I asked again, “What happened?”

It was Willough, my brother for all intents and purposes, that spoke, “Lilith and Myla are dead,” his eyes darkened, “Cirun as well.”

My stomach sank, and I shook my head, “and Basalt?”

Rosalind flinched away from the name.

Bryn spat on the floor, “Basalt is the fucking Wolf.”

The world spun around me, and I shook my head.

My sister growled. “Look at her, Caspian. Those bruises- the deaths of my friends and our brother? They rest on his hands. They are his work. Basalt is the Wolf.”

I straightened up and sat beside Rosalind, tugging her legs into my lap.

“He’ll come back to finish the job,” Will said quietly, motioning to Rosalind.

“He will not get the chance,” I vowed.
